This article summarizes the lawsuit Edmo v. Corizon, in which a transgender woman (Adree Edmo) sought to access gender confirmation surgery while incarcerated by the Idaho Department of Corrections. Edmo successfully argued that the surgery was medically necessary, and that denying her access therefore constituted cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the 8th Amendment. She received her surgery on July 10, 2020.
