The statistical evidence is overwhelming: lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) Americans are far more likely to be victims of violence than the general U.S. population. Moreover, this violence is often repetitive: once someone experiences violence, they are more likely to be revictimized. That means the violence that LGBTQ+ youth and teenagers experience needs to be addressed not only for its own sake, but also because that early violence often sets the stage for lifelong problems. This paper explores these pathways to polyvictimization of LGBTQ+ youth, but also—and more importantly—discusses simple and effective ways victim service providers, school personnel, and members of the general public can intervene and make a huge difference.
