This model policy document reflects national best policies and practices for police officers’ interactions with transgender people. The majority of these policies were originally developed by the National LGBT/HIV Criminal Justice Working Group, a coalition of nearly 40 organizations that includes the ACLU and Lambda Legal. While these are presented as model policies, they should be adapted by police departments in collaboration with local transgender leaders to better serve their community.
