Voices for Justice is an oral history project capturing the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) youth who have been confined in juvenile facilities in New York state. The juvenile justice system is designed to be a rehabilitative environment for vulnerable young people, but LGBT youth frequently leave juvenile detention more traumatized and harmed than they were when they went in. Sexual abuse and harassment, physical violence, and verbal abuse can be a daily reality for LGBT young people in juvenile detention. These brief narratives provide valuable insight into the challenge these youth face. [Summary adapted from resource.]
